Get ready for the Children’s’ Box Costume Contest!

This year, you’ll see something different at the 21st annual Jefferson Township Day Parade along Weldon Road on Saturday, July 14, 2007.  Instead of the children riding their Americana-themed decorated bicycles, they will be wearing cardboard boxes!

Children are being asked to be creative with a simple cardboard box and not only decorate it as some type of object, but wear it in the 11 AM township parade.  The possibilities are endless if you use your imagination – a robot, a race car, a TV set, a milk carton, a traffic light, a Lego block, an airplane, a box of popcorn, a computer, a locomotive, an army tank, a refrigerator, a birthday present, a Rubik’s cube, or even a jack-in-the-box to name a few.  If you have a computer, just Google “cardboard box costumes” to find websites with lots of ideas and directions.  Each child’s head and feet must protrude through the box and not be obstructed in way, and the child must be able to safely walk.

The members of the Knights of Columbus Joseph F. Lamb Council #5510 in Milton/Oak Ridge, who for years have judged the Jefferson Township Day bicycle parade, will judge this new contest; and trophies will be awarded after the parade for the “Most Original,” the “Funniest,” and the “Best Appearing.”  Medals will be given to all participants.

There is no pre-registration or fee to participate in the parade and contest.  All children wearing a decorated box should assemble at 10:15 AM in the Jefferson Township school bus compound lot on Weldon Road across from the Municipal Buillding driveway (1033 Weldon Road).  Motorists must pull into the driveway to drop off the child and cardboard box costume and follow the Parade Marshall’s directions as to where to park your vehicle.  The children will be accompanied by members of the Knight of Columbus Council into the parade line-up and proceed up Weldon Road.  Parents are encouraged to walk along with them.
