Instrumental Soloist Competition scheduled for May 2011
The Jefferson Arts Committee and the Instrumental Music Department of the Jefferson Township High School are co-sponsoring and planning their first Instrumental Soloist Competition for Friday evening, May 6, 2011 in the Jefferson Township High School auditorium, 1010 Weldon Road, Oak Ridge, NJ at 7:30 pm.
According to Co-Chairmen Jack Kelly and Richard Barrieres, students from high schools whose band directors are members of the Sussex County Music Educators Association and the North Jersey Area Band will be invited to compete. Applications accompanied by a $25 entry fee and a planned repertoire will be reviewed by a Selection Committee; and instrumentalists will be chosen according to their qualifications, accomplishments, and teacher recommendation. A total of 18 students with a maximum of five students per school will be chosen to perform in the concert/competition on May 6th. The event will be open to the public and a small admission fee will be charged.
A judging committee composed of band directors and/or members of the music profession will judge the competition. Each participant will be required to have their own accompanist; and based on the judges’ decisions, monetary scholarships for first, second, and third place will be awarded.
Details will be released as they become available, and applications will be distributed to area band directors in the fall through both band associations. Business and individual sponsors will be sought for the monetary scholarships and a program ad book which will be published for the event.
